Tasty Snaps from September 2013

0 · Oct 1, 2013 · 4 Comments

September is over and it definitely feels like fall has come to the mid-Atlantic region. I can already see the leaves changing color and fall produce has started popping up in grocery stores and markets. With the change in seasons comes a new direction in my life. I am focusing on myself and what I want instead of worrying so much about other people, getting settled into life at home in the US and giving life in this area a real chance. So with that being said, let me show you some of my tasty snaps from September.

1. I went to the beach for the first week of September for my friend Bettina’s bachelorette party. After a terrible experience at the local winery, we decided to wash away the memory of that horrible time by visiting the Dogfish Head Brewery. It was great fun, and although I wasn’t drinking anything but the small samples (I was the designated driver) I got to check out the food truck parked outside featuring sausages made with Dogfish Head Brew. I had a spicy espresso brat that was made with a touch of their chicory stout topped with Thai mustard.

Bulgogi and Quick Pickled Kimchi

bulgogi and kimchi

I got a lovely email from a reader in the Philippines telling me about a kind of recipe contest for Ingredient Matcher, a new cooking app that is launching this fall. It sounded really interesting and right up my alley. They are putting together an ecookbook featuring national dishes from all the countries in the world. I submitted an email of interest to whip up a dish representing Korea. The dish they chose to represent Korea was bulgogi with kimchi. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by the challenge of creating a kimchi recipe. Kimchi is something that usually takes days to ferment. This recipe uses a short cut method of pouring very hot, salted water to quickly pickle the cabbage leaves. It’s a fresher kimchi that has no hint of sourness. If you’ve been put off by the pungent aroma of kimchi I’d suggest this recipe as an introduction into the big, wide world of kimchi!

I’m really excited for my first giveaway! I love participating in these on other blogs (although I’ve never won anything on a food blog, I did win concert tickets on an expat site in Korea!), and I thought it would be a nice way to say thank you to my readers. My first giveaway will feature my new favorite cookbook, The French Market Cookbook: Vegetarian Recipes from my Parisian Kitchen by Clotilde Dusoulier.

Buttermilk Popovers with Raspberry and Lemon

buttermilk popovers with raspberry and lemon

One of my favorite aspects of cooking is the opportunity it gives you to be creative and inventive. I didn’t really start getting interested in cooking until I was in college, and even then I was still very timid about venturing outside the limits of recipes. But things like hunger and snowstorms will give you that little push you need to think on your toes when supplies are limited. I attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia and being a southern city outside the mountains, you expect a few snow flurries but not snowstorms, but one winter I was stuck in my apartment in the middle of a snowstorm with hardly any provisions, no restaurants open and no take out joint delivering.

Baked Huevos Rancheros in a Tortilla Cup

Sometimes I’m a lazy food blogger. Generally, yes, I love to get my hands dirty and I make a big mess in the kitchen happily. But I’m not ambitious enough to make things from scratch every time I want something to eat. I do have a day job and I am prone to watching entire seasons of TV shows in one sitting on the weekend (don’t judge me).
